Game Design 2022

Another academic year, and another completed run of our Game Design course. This is a third year course where we take Computer Science and Software Engineering students through the principles of Game Design and Development, using Unity as our engine.

Each year we set the students two challenges. The first is to create a game with a tutorial level and a strong core dynamic, the second is to create a non-linear narrative game with a story engine where the gameplay impacts the story, and the story impacts the gameplay.

The students get four weeks on each challenge – which in terms of working time is roughly the equivalent to a weekend GameJam, and I am always impressed by what they manage to deliver. We Let’s Play all of the games as a way to give the students feedback, and publish these on YouTube. You can see this year’s games below (over 50 hours of them!).

Coursework 1 – Tutorial Level

Coursework 2 – Interactive Narrative
