(Adv) Game Design 2023

Another year and another run of our Game Design course. As normal the students did an incredible job of getting their heads around Unity in what seems like six minutes, and producing two amazing sets of games in four week sprints. We then produce Let’s Plays for each game, based around the marks criteria for that sprint.

The first sprint is focused on producing a game with a clear Core Dynamic and a Tutorial (preferably integrated into the game). You can can see our let’s plays below:

The second sprint is focused on producing a narrative game with a branching interactive structure and interesting choices. You can watch the let’s plays for that here:

And an exciting addition to this annual post is that we are about to start a new Advanced Games course for our MEng students. In this new module we are giving the students a bit more time to develop their idea, from GameJam prototype to Game Design Document to Vertical Slice. We also have the chance to explore new design areas such as artificial intelligence, multi-player design, computational narratives, and mixed reality games. I’m particularly excited to be able to teach some of the research topics that I am involved with, and convert the design and craft knowledge we have built up into teaching materials. Its an important part of academic life, and something I really enjoyed about my work in Web Science.

And of course I’ll be able to share those games here too πŸ™‚

Update! – The games are now available on our usual YouTube account:
