Game Design 2021

The close of the University’s first semester means the completion of the 2021 Games Design course that I run with Tom Blount and Age Chapman for our third year computer science students.

This was the seventh run of the module, which is starting to feel properly established at this point. The idea is to give our students an introduction to games design, and give them the opportunity to create two small game prototypes for their portfolio – mimicking the sort of timescale they might get in a Game-jam (albeit stretched over four weeks). We then create a 30 min Let’s Play for each game, where we evaluate how well they have done against the brief. The first game should demonstrate a strong core dynamics, and include a tutorial section. The second should include an interactive narrative element, with meaningful choices and alternative endings.

Every year the student’s surpass my expectations. You can see the Let’s Play videos below:

Coursework 1 – Tutorial Level

Coursework 2 – Interactive Narrative

Glory to Kuste!
