Game Design 2020

Once more we have just completed our Games Design and Development course at Southampton.

This year we slimmed things down a little and asked the students to work in pairs to create two prototype games. They have around 4 weeks to do each game. The first is focused on level design, and in particular creating a game with an integrated tutorial. The second is focused on interactive narrative, and the students were asked to create a game containing a branching narrative where the player has some agency over the story.

For each game we produce a Let’s Play video where we try to give an honest first reaction, and then appraise the game against the criteria for the course. The second set of these were produced in the time of COVID, so was done completely remotely – but I think we managed okay.

You can see all the work (through the Let’s Plays) on the course YouTube channel. I never cease to be impressed by what that can produce!

Coursework 1 – Tutorial Level

Coursework 2 – Interactive Narrative
